A Guide to Various Hotel Room Types

Travelers around the world search for the best type of hotel room available with all the required amenities. There are many types of hotel rooms to choose from, though there is no standard type. However, there are some standard commonalities that allow the traveler to estimate the space and cost of the room. Some of the basic classification that helps a traveler to understand the cost and amenities regarding various types of hotel rooms are discussed herein:

1. Standard

A standard room denotes the most basic type of room offered by the hotel. Such types of hotel rooms offer all the basic amenities with minimal or no luxury. The view from the room might not be aesthetic and, in most cases, are streets or parking lots. However, these standards do vary from brand to brand. Some hotels are known for their upscale services and offer a service similar to that of a luxury hotel, whereas the ones focusing on budget travelers will only offer the basic ones. In some cases, hotels label a room standard and offer rooms that fall under the budget or economy class. In some cases, hoteliers charge a premium for a standard room with a desirable view and label them as a moderate or superior room.

2. Deluxe

Deluxe rooms are above the standard, moderate and superior rooms. Deluxe rooms are the ones that have a better view and offer a number of luxurious amenities for travelers. A bathtub is one such luxury available in deluxe rooms. Deluxe rooms are spacious and have better furniture when compared to a standard or a superior room.

3. Junior Suite

Adding a separate work area or a space for sitting with a deluxe room is basically what hoteliers call a Junior Suite. Although not a full-fledged suite, these types of hotel rooms provide travelers some space to sit and relax or even work. If the hotel offers a small kitchen area, then the room is called a studio room.

4. Suite

A suite offers a separate sitting or a working area apart from the bedroom. A proper suite will have a wall mostly with a door to separate the rooms. It is not necessary for a suite to have a kitchen area. It has been found that some hotels advertise junior suites as full ones; hence, it is always best for the traveler to inquire about the features of the room before booking.

5. Bed types

Travelers booking a hotel room are sometimes offered rooms on the basis of the type of bed present in the room. A room with a king-sized bed is usually classified as “K” and a room with a queen-sized bed is denoted as “Q”. A double bedroom is denoted by D. Some even specify the number of beds offered by the hotel.

6. Views

Apart from describing the features of the room, the type of furniture offered, some rooms categorize themselves on the basis of the view they offer. Hotels advertise their rooms as ocean view, mountain view, and even city view. Depending on the location of the room, they may even name it pool view, garden view, lake view, and so on.
